Could we spare a moment to appreciate Natalie’s arc in Big Mouth?

3-genetic-bugs-in-a-trenchcoat

You see her appear literally in minute five of a new season of this obscene, gross and equally wonderful show, and you instantly go “Please don’t mess this up. If you do, you’ll mess me up and ruin the whole experience of previous seasons”.

But they don’t mess it up. In fact, the whole way Natalie is presented is amazing, even if sometimes painfully relatable. She’s thrown into the deep waters of navigating her own shit, new social circumstances, and the usual transphobia on top of that all. And she’s not shown as the victim here. And neither as the ultimate trans role model™. She acts like you would expect a teenager to react, gender stuff aside - sometimes too shy, sometimes too bitchy, always self-conscious and full of anxiety… because being a teenager is so much fun, right?

Above all, though, she is brave as fuck. She has the bravery I didn’t have her age… and not even a decade later. She knew exactly what she was signing up for. She had all the worst scenarios in her head. And some of them came true. But she did what she could to make it through, and I can only imagine that some of that will help her through hard times in the future.

I wish we had more of Natalie in the show. I wish we could have more queer characters like this in media in general, but boy, do I miss her already. Amd at the same time I’m grateful that her arc ended on a high leaving me with nothing to be salty about. It’s quality, not quantity, as they say…

… but maybe, just maybe, could I get a bit more joy of watching her, please?
